Priorities for District 5

We have an amazing community with many resources.  Here is my vision below how we can better build on our strengths and grow together.

Lower Taxes and Expand Services for Seniors

Seniors deserve to live with dignity and age comfortably in the communities they have helped build. Shayla is committed to reducing the tax burden on seniors while expanding critical services that allow them to age in place. This includes improving access to affordable healthcare, home care services, and transportation options tailored to their needs. Shayla also prioritizes enhancing community programs that combat social isolation and provide opportunities for seniors to stay active and engaged. By addressing these needs, Shayla ensures seniors can thrive and maintain their independence in District 5.

Provide Stellar Constituent Services

Shayla believes that every resident of District 5 deserves timely, accessible, and effective support from their local government. Her goal is to establish a constituent services team that is responsive, solution-oriented, and accountable. This includes streamlining processes for residents to voice their concerns, report issues, and access vital resources such as housing assistance, job training, and community programs. Shayla will also advocate for transparency and consistent communication, ensuring residents feel informed and supported. She understands that strong constituent services build trust and create stronger connections between the community and its leaders.

Pursue Community-Based Development

Shayla envisions development that reflects the values and voices of District 5 residents, not the interests of outside developers or wealthy investors. Her approach prioritizes supporting local businesses, increasing affordable housing options, and attracting high-quality retail establishments that serve the community’s needs. Shayla will champion inclusive development practices that ensure residents have a say in shaping their neighborhoods. Additionally, she will work to balance economic growth with preserving the unique character of District 5, ensuring long-term benefits for all residents without displacing current communities.

Create High-Wage Careers Through Skills Training and Union Partnerships

Shayla is dedicated to preparing District 5’s workforce for industries of the future by investing in robust skills training programs. She will collaborate with unions, businesses, and educational institutions to develop apprenticeship programs and job training initiatives that lead to high-wage, sustainable careers. This includes equipping residents with the tools to thrive in sectors such as technology, healthcare, and green energy. By fostering partnerships and creating opportunities for career advancement, Shayla ensures that the local economy grows while empowering residents to achieve economic stability and success.

Improve Public Safety by Addressing Root Causes of Crime

To enhance public safety, Shayla recognizes the need to go beyond traditional law enforcement measures by addressing the underlying issues that contribute to crime. She will focus on initiatives that reduce poverty, provide economic opportunities, and expand access to mental health and substance abuse services. Shayla also supports youth programs that offer mentorship, after-school activities, and skill-building opportunities to prevent young people from falling into cycles of violence. By tackling these systemic issues, she aims to create safer neighborhoods where residents feel secure and supported.
